"At the first sign of a pandemic, there would be a run on indispensable items such as food, water, and power. ...With today’s global supply chain, shortages would soon develop." --Dr. Sherry Cooper, Chief Economist, BMO Nesbitt Burns
The easiest way to develop a food stockpile is to increase the amount of basic, nonperishable foods you normally keep on your shelves. Buy extra each time you go to the grocery. Use foods before they go bad, and replace them with fresh supplies, dated with ink or marker. Ideas:
A supplemental approach - which offers a longer shelf-life and added variety - is to use meals and energy foods which are specially prepared for long-term storage.
If you were temporarily confined to home (or work) - due to flu pandemic, winter storm, or whatever - it would be comforting to have foods like beef stroganoff, lasagna, sweet corn, and scrambled eggs with bacon. To that end, you can get what campers, recreational vehicle owners, and emergency planners routinely use - Mountain House Freeze-Dried Food. If you're not familiar with it, "freeze-dried food" may sound yucky. But once it's rehydrated, it's good and nutritious. The food is pre-cooked, freeze-dried, and ready to eat in 10 minutes! Just add hot water. (Cold water works in a pinch.) Nitro-Pak Preparedness Center has Mountain House meals in various sized units.
